Known as the “Whiskey” route, this six to seven-day camping trail stands as Kilimanjaro’s preferred choice, embraced by approximately 35% of all climbers. Offering a balanced blend of stunning vistas and a gratifying challenge, the Machame Route ensures ample acclimatization, suiting those with flexible itineraries.

Contrary to the “Coca-Cola” simplicity of the Marangu route, Machame’s rugged terrains insist on tented accommodations, providing an authentic outdoor experience. The journey unfolds through iconic landmarks, including the Lava Tower and Shira Plateau, traversing valleys and ridges demanding resilience but rewarding unrivalled panoramas. From beginning the trek on the southern flank, beneath the Southern Ice Field, to reach the summit from Barafu Camp, the Machame Route displays a diverse topography, ensuring a memorable adventure with Simba Safaris.

Machame Route

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The Machame Route is moderately challenging due to its longer path, allowing better acclimatization. Still, good fitness is essential for the trek. No technical climbing is involved.

The Machame Route spans 62 km (37 miles). Minimum climb duration is six days. However, 7 or 8 days are recommended for acclimatization and better success.

On average, 85% succeed on a 7-day trek and 73% on a 6-day trek when Climbing Kilimanjaro via Machame Route.

The Machame Route offers diverse landscapes, transitioning through 5 climatic zones, including rainforest, grasslands, and glacial zones. Landmarks include the Shira Plateau and the Lava Tower.

July-September is the ideal time to Climb Kilimanjaro due to stable weather. However, Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, avoiding the rainy season in April and May.

All the arrangements made with Simba were well organised and exactly as booked. Very professional company. Our tour guide and driver for the 6 nt safari was John Marko who was very knowledgeable, helpful and quick to spot animals.

We experienced a 7 day Safari with Hassan through Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire National Park. Everything was well organized. Hassan was waiting for us with hot coffee at the airport and drove us for the first game drive to Lake Manyara.
