Rongai Route

Discover Kilimanjaro’s Less Trodden Path

Rongai Route, renowned for its untamed wilderness, approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from its north-eastern side, close to the Kenya-Tanzania border. This trail is the only pathway starting from Kilimanjaro's northern side. An ideal choice for thrill-seekers seeking solitude, Rongai stands out as one of the more secluded routes, offering unparalleled peace for most of the trek.

With decades of expertise, Simba Safaris often recommends Rongai for its gradual ascent, facilitating better acclimatization and enhancing summit success rates. The trail's northern location also makes it the driest route, favouring treks even during the rainy season. Besides, early days on this route might surprise trekkers with wildlife sightings. As the path traverses north to south, it gives hikers diverse panoramic views of this iconic mountain.

Simba Safaris – Tanzania – East Africa, has Followed this simple yet successful formula for over Fifty years and it has earned us a reputation as the finest luxury safari operator in East Africa. Despite the challenging global situation, we have no plans to change our “modus operandi” and we plan to enhance it further.

Rongai Route

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Rongai is viewed as Kilimanjaro's easiest path due to its gradual ascent. However, its acclimatization profile is less beneficial than Machame or Lemosho routes. A 7-day trek is advised for better acclimatization. No special climbing skills are needed, just a good fitness level.

Rongai spans 79km or 49 miles. Typically, the trek takes at least six days, but with arrival and departure, it's 9-10 days. A 7-day trek is preferred for higher success chances.

Kilimanjaro Success Rates are higher for longer treks. On average, it is reported that the success trek is 80% for 7-day treks and 65% for 6-day treks. Our success rate is 95% for both durations. Longer treks are often recommended.

Rongai is the only route from Kilimanjaro's north near Kenya. It offers secluded wilderness views. Wildlife sightings are expected early in the trek. The route transitions from rainforest to moorlands, alpine zones, and finally, the glacier region.

July to September is optimal due to stable weather. However, Kilimanjaro is accessible year-round. The rainy season is in April and May, but Rongai's northern location experiences less rain, making May and November suitable for treks.
