When To Visit

The ideal time to explore Udzungwa Mountains National Park is from June to October. Wildlife In Udzungwa Mountains

Buffalo

The African or Cape buffalo is Africa's only wild cattle species and should not be confused with the domestic water buffalo. Savanna buffaloes are large, heavy cow-like animals. They vary greatly not only in size but in the shapes of their horns and their coloring.

Bushbuck

It is a common and a widespread species of antelope in Sub-Saharan Africa. Bushbuck are found in a wide range of habitats, such as rain forests, montane forests, forest-savanna mosaic, savanna, bushveld and woodland.

Yellow Baboobs

The Yellow Baboon observed in Selous differs from the Olive Baboon by being slender and having thin legs. It also lacks the mane around the head and shoulders, a feature of the Olive Baboon.

Kipunji Monkey

The kipunji was only discovered in 2003 during WCS surveys high on the slopes of Mt. Rungwe in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands. A year later it was also found in the Udzungwa Mountains.

African Civet

This nocturnal mammal, with its distinctive black and white markings and bushy tail, is one of the park's elusive creatures. Civets play a crucial role in controlling pest populations and seed dispersal.

Udzungwa National Park stands out for its exceptional biodiversity, housing the second-highest variety of species in Africa. It features diverse habitats like tropical rainforests and miombo woodlands and is the only place to spot the rare Iringa red colobus and Sanje crested mangabey monkeys.

Travellers to Udzungwa can enjoy hiking to the stunning Sanje Waterfall, bird watching with over 400 species present, and exploring the park's diverse flora and fauna on foot, as there are no paved roads within the park.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park was officially designated as a national park in 1992, reflecting its importance as a centre for biodiversity and conservation.

Udzungwa experiences most of its rainfall between November and May. The higher elevations often have mist and light rain even in the dry season, with cooler temperatures.

We experienced a 7 day Safari with Hassan through Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire National Park. Everything was well organized. Hassan was waiting for us with hot coffee at the airport and drove us for the first game drive to Lake Manyara.
